How to Write Editing Prompts That Get the Result You Want

Specific beats vague. A short guide to giving clear instructions to an AI editing assistant, with before-and-after examples.

A prompt is an edit note. The clearer the note, the closer the first result.

Include three things

  • What to change (silences, captions, pacing, music)
  • Where to apply it (whole sequence, selected clips, a time range)
  • Any limits (durations, padding, style)

Before and after

Vague:

Make it better.

Specific:

Remove pauses over half a second in the selected clips and add a subtle J-cut between each speaker.
